How rugby is organised in Wales

Competition structureEurope region·Sources checked 17 Aug 2026

Welsh Rugby Union domestic rugby includes a separate ten-club Super Rygbi Cymru family, 29 published 2026/27 community men’s league families with 298 team placements, and six senior women’s families with 43 entries. These season placements are not an all-club list.

Governing authorityWelsh Rugby Union

Live tables are Dutch, for now.→

The country structure

Permanent leagues, seasonal phases and parallel competitions stay separate so a cup or playoff is not mistaken for a league tier.

Senior men

Super Rygbi Cymru is a separate ten-club elite-domestic competition, while the 2026/27 community structure begins with a 13-team Premiership and two 13-team Championship divisions.

  • Super Rygbi Cymru

The licensed competition remains outside the community game. Its regular-season, playoff, Cup, and Challenge Shield outcomes stay distinct, and no automatic community-ladder movement is verified.

  • Community national leagues

The owner publishes 29 league families and 298 team placements for 2026/27. The publication records prior-season movements but does not publish a reusable current-season rules or promotion contract.

Community regional families

Below the two Championship divisions, the 2026/27 community catalogue publishes 26 geographic divisions across East, East Central, West Central, West, and North.

  • Season-specific divisions

The 26 numbered or split divisions contain 259 published team placements. Their future depth, phase rules, allocation, and cross-region movement are not shown here from the roster.

Senior women

The official 2026/27 women’s release publishes Premiership, Championship, East, Central, West, and North families with 43 entries.

  • Named league families

The release records last-season promotion, relegation, and reassignment outcomes, but no reusable 2026/27 phase, points, or movement rulebook was found.

Club coverage

Club list not finished

WRU states 276 affiliated and member community clubs for its 2026/27 funding model, but publishes no club-by-club list or class split. The 276 total, 298 men’s placements, 43 women’s entries, ten SRC teams, and four professional teams are separate counts, not one Welsh club list.
