Several separate groups were already playing rugby in Groningen. In 1967 Koos Kuiper merged the main ones, townspeople and students, into a single club.
After its subsidy ended, the club attached itself to football club Be Quick 1887 in 1974. In 1984 cultural differences were too large, and RCG or Be Quick decided it was time to stand on its own again. In 1986 the students left and founded GSRC. RCG history page
