How rugby is organised in India

Competition structureAsia region · Guide updated 12 Aug 2026
StructureCompetitionsClubsSources

Rugby India's 2026 schedule lists separate national fifteens and sevens events for men and women and names junior and sub-junior sevens. Federation pages point to a state-association model. This page does not merge state representative sides with clubs or show a complete national pyramid.

Governing authorityIndian Rugby Football Union
Dutch rugby standings

The country structure

Permanent leagues, seasonal phases and parallel competitions stay separate so a cup or playoff is not mistaken for a league tier.

Senior men's national events

Rugby India's 2026 schedule names a men's National Rugby 15s Championship, Division 1, and a separate senior men's National Rugby 7s event.

  • Dated event records

The schedule gives event names and formats only. It does not show a lasting competition, teams, phases, results, lower divisions or promotion rules.

Senior women's national events

The same schedule also names a women's National Rugby 15s Championship, Division 1, and a senior women's National Rugby 7s event.

  • Separate competition displays

The men's and women's events stay separate. The published material does not show that they share one permanent competition, team system or season structure.

Junior and sub-junior rugby

Rugby India's 2026 schedule names junior and sub-junior National Rugby 7s events. These are age-grade events, not lower senior tiers.

  • Age-grade boundary

No youth team, school, academy or pathway is shown here from the event names.

Sevens remains a separate format

Senior, junior and sub-junior sevens events stay separate from the national fifteens events. This page does not combine their teams or results.

  • No cross-format identity inference

A state representative side, club or institution that plays in one format is not automatically the same team in another.

State associations and representative rugby

Rugby India links state associations. State representative sides, clubs, schools and university teams are different things.

  • No complete branch registry

Federation website links are not treated as a complete map of who governs what, and no state association or representative side is listed here from a link name.
