How rugby is organised in Kenya

Kenya Rugby Union governs the national system and publishes separate senior men's leagues, regional Nationwide competitions, cups and women's competitions. The completed 2025/26 Kenya Cup is explained here without treating its source labels as canonical clubs or teams.

Governing authorityKenya Rugby Union

Hierarchy

The country structure

Permanent leagues, seasonal phases and parallel competitions stay separate so a cup or playoff is not mistaken for a league tier.

Senior men's XV

The completed 2025/26 Kenya Cup moved from an incompletely documented regular season through playoffs to a final. Kenya Rugby Union separately names the Championship League below it.

  • Named movement is season-specific

Kisumu RFC and MMUST RFC moved to the Championship League, while Mwamba RFC and JKUAT Cougars entered Kenya Cup for 2026/27. These are four named outcomes, not a permanent automatic rule.

Nationwide regional rugby

KRU's official records name separate Nationwide regional league groups. The reviewed evidence does not establish a complete regional-owner map or one automatic national pyramid.

  • Regional relationships remain bounded

Named completed-season movements connect some Nationwide groups to Championship League, but they do not prove every feeder, eligibility rule or future movement relationship.

Women's rugby

KRU's season conclusion names Women's Kenya Cup and Rugby Women's Championship outcomes separately from the men's Kenya Cup.

  • Separate family evidence required

The reviewed record does not establish complete women's formats, participants, tables or movement relationships, so no women's family is projected yet.

Cup competitions

Enterprise Cup and Mwamba Cup are separately named knockout families and are not phases of Kenya Cup.

  • No combined table

Cup outcomes do not complete the Kenya Cup table or establish a movement rule between competitions.
