How rugby is organised in France

French rugby has separate LNR professional men's, FFR federal and national women's, and organizer-specific territorial and overseas competition branches. Published family and group denominators do not establish a reusable all-club census or a single rights scope.

Governing authorityLigue Nationale de RugbyGoverning authorityFédération Française de RugbyGoverning authorityFFR territorial leagues

Hierarchy

The country structure

Permanent leagues, seasonal phases and parallel competitions stay separate so a cup or playoff is not mistaken for a league tier.

Senior men

Top 14 and Pro D2 are LNR professional families. Nationale, Nationale 2 and Fédérale 1–3 are FFR federal families; their season-specific movement rules are not republished here.

  • LNR professional families

Top 14 is above Pro D2. The checked Pro D2 surface identifies an access match with the Nationale finalist and direct relegation to Nationale, without turning phases or outcomes into a Frostlete table rule.

  • FFR federal families

The 2026/27 FFR release names Nationale, Nationale 2 and Fédérale 1, 2 and 3 as federal senior men's families.

Senior women

The national women's XV families named by the FFR are AXA Élite 1 Féminine, Élite 2 Féminine, Fédérale 1 Féminine and Fédérale 2 Féminine.

  • National women's XV families

These are kept separate from men's federal and territorial labels; this projection does not assert a uniform regional women's format or movement rule.

Reserve and development

Réserves Élite, Espoirs and youth competitions are separately published FFR families, not extra senior first-team XV levels.

  • Parallel families

The FFR release separately names Réserves Élite, Reichel Espoirs Élite and Accession, Espoirs Nationaux and Fédéraux, plus national U18 and U16 families.

  • No parent-club inference

A reserve, development or age-grade competition participant is not presented as a senior first team or a canonical Frostlete club identity.

Territorial competition

The FFR navigation lists 13 mainland territorial leagues, and the reviewed organization record identifies seven overseas committees. Their catalogues, providers, phases, and rights are organizer-specific rather than one nationally interchangeable dataset.

  • Regional ownership

Regional labels, pools, formats, reserve structures and phases remain with the relevant territorial organizer; this guide does not combine them into a single national table or directory.

Separate formats

IN EXTENSO SUPERSEVENS is an LNR professional club sevens event, separate from the men's XV families.

  • Professional sevens

The LNR's 2026/27 calendar identifies qualifying stages and a final for IN EXTENSO SUPERSEVENS; these are event stages, not permanent XV hierarchy levels.

Club census and history boundary

FFR's 1,977-club campaign figure is a dated communications and locator observation, not a retained all-affiliate census. LNR and FFR publish strong but differently scoped history sources that do not create one canonical all-France honours table.

  • No additive club denominator

Professional entrants, federal association records, territorial directories, and overseas lists are differently scoped and cannot be added into an all-club count.

  • History remains owner and family scoped

The LNR first-division register and bounded PRO D2 and FFR palmarès evidence preserve cancelled, no-award, unknown, display-name, and identity distinctions rather than being recomputed into club honours.
