Five practical ways to welcome more junior players

Junior recruitment starts with a first session that parents understand and children can join without already knowing how the club works.

A junior section grows one family at a time. The first message, the first arrival at the clubhouse and the first few minutes on the pitch all shape whether somebody feels comfortable coming back.

  1. Explain the first session clearly. Share the time, location, age group, what to wear and who will meet the family when they arrive.
  2. Make it easy to ask a basic question. Give parents one named contact instead of sending them through several committee members.
  3. Keep spare kit available. A child should be able to try rugby before a family has bought everything on a kit list.
  4. Introduce people properly. A coach, team manager or parent volunteer can explain the routine and help a new family find their place around the session.
  5. Follow up in plain language. Tell the family when the next session is, what happens next and how to say that they are coming back.

None of this needs a large campaign. It needs a club that has thought through the first visit and made the next step obvious.
