How rugby is organised in New Zealand

New Zealand Rugby's national domestic competitions are provincial representative systems, not one national club pyramid. The NPC, Heartland Championship and Farah Palmer Cup remain separate families, while 26 provincial unions own local administration and club pathways.

Hierarchy

The country structure

Permanent leagues, seasonal phases and parallel competitions stay separate so a cup or playoff is not mistaken for a league tier.

Provincial representative rugby

The NPC is a 14-union representative competition. Heartland is a separate 12-union family, and neither is a list of canonical clubs or an automatic club promotion ladder.

  • NPC

    The completed 2025 edition used one 10-match regular table followed by an eight-team knockout series. The 2026 Hilux sponsor name does not create a new stable family.

  • Heartland Championship

    Heartland is a parallel provincial representative family. No movement relationship to the NPC is asserted.

Women's provincial rugby

The Farah Palmer Cup is a separate women's provincial representative family. Its season-specific structure does not create a club-to-NPC pathway.
