How rugby is organised in Italy

Italian rugby has separately named national senior men’s and women’s XV families under FIR, followed by a territorial Serie C handoff rather than one nationwide lower-division competition.

Governing authorityFederazione Italiana RugbyGoverning authorityFIR territorial bodies

Hierarchy

The country structure

Permanent leagues, seasonal phases and parallel competitions stay separate so a cup or playoff is not mistaken for a league tier.

Senior men

The national order is Serie A Elite, Serie A and Serie B, followed by territorially organized Serie C.

  • 2025/26 structure

Serie A Elite had one group; Serie A had a meritocratic group and three territorial groups; Serie B had five geographic groups; and Serie C was organized through the territorial layer.

  • 2026/27 men’s Serie A

FIR publishes one 48-team family: a 12-team meritocratic group and 36 teams across three territorial groups. Earlier A1/A2 language is retained only as season-specific transition vocabulary.

  • Current Elite and Serie B boundary

FIR confirms the 2026/27 start dates, but this review did not recover a complete official current format and participant receipt for either family. The prior 60-team Serie B claim is withheld rather than repeated.

Senior women

Serie A Elite and Serie A are separate connected women’s national XV families.

  • 2026/27 Serie A Elite

Eight teams play a 14-round home-and-away stage; the top four reach single-match semi-finals and a final, and one team is relegated. Participant labels remain unprojected.

  • 2026/27 Serie A

Twenty teams are presented in one meritocratic and three geographic groups, followed by a final whose winner is promoted. Group labels and movement remain edition-scoped.

  • Teams are not clubs by default

Cadette, combinations, club sections, franchises, institutional sides, and sponsor-bearing entries remain team or season labels until a separate authorized identity review establishes a durable relationship.

Territorial Serie C

FIR delegates Serie C composition and geography to territorial bodies. The 13 committees and eight delegations are an organization roster, not evidence of 21 equivalent competition owners or one uniform regional pyramid.

  • Historical 2025/26 allocation

The completed allocation recorded 173 source-displayed teams across five geographic areas and 18 direct promotions. That is not a current club census or a national Serie C table.

  • Current lower-tier boundary

No complete 2026/27 Serie C territorial catalogue is asserted. Groups, exact owners, corrections, and movement must be verified by territorial source and season.

Cups and parallel competitions

Coppa Italia and Supercoppa sit alongside the XV league families. FIR’s 2026 delegation gives Lega limited event-organization responsibility for named finals; it does not transfer the national pyramid or its data rights.

  • Separate formats and authority

Cup, final, playoff, qualification, sevens, youth, and development labels describe a competition or phase for a named season. They are not extra senior XV tiers or evidence of a general Lega ownership role.
