How rugby is organised in Ireland

Rugby union in Ireland is one all-island IRFU jurisdiction: national men’s and women’s All-Ireland League families connect to four provincially owned qualifying systems. A dated IRFU strategy gives a 217-club aggregate but no public row roster, while reserve, university, youth, schools, cup and representative competitions remain separate.

Hierarchy

The country structure

Permanent leagues, seasonal phases and parallel competitions stay separate so a cup or playoff is not mistaken for a league tier.

Senior men

For 2026/27, the IRFU publishes men’s All-Ireland League 1A, 1B, 2A, 2BN and 2BS; 2BN and 2BS replace the historical 2B and 2C families.

  • National All-Ireland League

    The north/south labels are an IRFU allocation within one all-island competition system, not separate national jurisdictions. Movement and membership are season-specific and are not reproduced here.

  • Provincial qualifying handoff

    Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster own separate provincial qualifying systems. Their named league depth and current participants are not treated as one national ladder in this hub.

Senior women

For 2026/27, the IRFU publishes Women’s All-Ireland League Divisions 1A and 1B, each with six teams, with provincial qualifying winners on a separate playoff route.

  • National and provincial families

    The national 1A/1B playoff and the qualifying-winner route are published by the IRFU. Provincial women’s catalogues remain branch-owned and are not inferred from prior seasons.

Provincial competition

The four IRFU provincial branches publish domestic competition activity under their own ownership.

  • Four branch systems

    Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster competition families are distinct official branches. Ulster crosses the state border, so province, geography and the all-island rugby jurisdiction must remain separate identities.

Reserve, university and development

Provincial reserve and lower-team competitions, and university-associated sides, are separate team contexts from senior first-XV All-Ireland League participation.

  • Identity boundary

    Seconds, J1/J2, academy, development, university and representative labels must not be converted into first-XV records or merged with a club solely from a shared name or institution.

Schools and youth

Provincial branches also publish schools, youth and age-grade activity alongside adult competition families.

  • Age-grade competition

    Schools and youth leagues, cups and regional events are separate age-grade competition families, not senior league-table levels.

Cups and representative events

National and provincial cups, plus representative activity, sit alongside league families rather than forming extra permanent divisions.

  • Parallel events

    Cup, playoff, provincial championship and representative labels describe separate events or season phases; they are not additional rungs in an all-island league ladder.
