How rugby is organised in Germany

German rugby combines Rugby Deutschland’s national families, an RBA-operated men’s Bundesliga scope, and 13 separate Landesverband handoffs. The current public club finder and regional sources do not establish one complete nationwide club census or lower-division ladder.

Hierarchy

The country structure

Permanent leagues, seasonal phases and parallel competitions stay separate so a cup or playoff is not mistaken for a league tier.

National senior men

The completed 2025/26 men’s Rugby-Bundesliga used a ten-team 1. Bundesliga regular season and final, plus two regional 2. Bundesliga groups followed by cross-group semi-finals and a final.

  • 2026/27 policy boundary

The RBA’s 13 June 2026 decision retains Rugby Club Luxembourg, records no top-flight relegation, keeps two second-division regional groups, permits conditional playing communities, excludes second teams prospectively, and announces an equal-position cross-group pilot. Exact capacity, round count, participant fields, and enduring movement remain unresolved without the June operating guideline.

  • Bundesliga families

SC Frankfurt 1880 won the 1. Bundesliga final and RK Heusenstamm won the 2. Bundesliga final. These are dated source outcomes, not canonical club records.

  • Regional handoff

Below the national men’s groups, the next competition must be resolved with the applicable Landesverband rather than inferred as one national level.

National senior women

Rugby Deutschland’s completed 2025/26 women’s XV record separates Frauenbundesliga A from the two Frauenbundesliga B regional groups, then records shared playoffs and a relegation match.

  • Current-season boundary

No official 2026/27 women’s XV season document was recovered. The A/B structure and movement phases remain historical 2025/26 evidence and are not carried forward.

  • Document-led families

The three federation documents record separate A, B North and B South regular groups. Their shared B playoffs and A/B relegation match are bounded 2025/26 phases, not proof of an automatic recurring movement rule.

  • Separate sevens structure

Women’s regional sevens is a separate tournament structure, not a substitute for missing women’s XV levels.

Regional ownership

Landesverbände run regional and lower rugby in different combinations. Their competition names, geography and publication systems are not a uniform national product.

  • Season-by-season ownership

Use the actual regional competition owner for official information. Similar Regionalliga or Verbandsliga labels do not prove the same tier, coverage or movement rule.

Season-team boundaries

A national competition entry can be a cross-border participant or a playing community. A season-team label does not by itself create a German club identity or a permanent participation right.

  • Cross-border participation

A Luxembourg club appears in the checked national men’s evidence. That dated entry remains distinct from a German club or regional affiliation.

  • Playing communities

A published second Bundesliga playing community must remain a participation record, not be converted into either constituent or a separate club.

Club coverage

One reviewed atlas club

Frostlete has reviewed Rugby Club Aachen e.V. and its senior men’s first team as one bounded atlas record. The current finder displays 135 Germany-region organisations but includes at least a school and a referee body, retains no stable membership/lifecycle rows, and does not reconcile to the historical 137-club 2020 aggregate. Other clubs, departments, composites, and participant labels remain unprojected.

League families

Where each competition sits

National senior men

permanent family

The completed 2025/26 family combined a ten-team 1. Bundesliga regular season and final with two regional 2. Bundesliga groups and cross-group playoffs. For 2026/27 the RBA retains three national family labels and publishes edition-specific policy, but exact format, participant fields, and recurring movement remain unresolved.

National senior women

permanent family

The completed 2025/26 Frauenbundesliga record contains an A regular season and title playoffs, two B regional groups and shared playoffs, plus one A/B relegation match. No official 2026/27 women’s XV season document was recovered, so the prior structure is not carried forward.

Regional Landesverband rugby

programme map

Regional competitions must be read through the owning Landesverband. Rugby Deutschland confirms a 13-Landesverband handoff, while one bounded Baden-Württemberg 2026/27 notice shows a mixed participant scope. This projection does not claim complete regional coverage or a shared national tier order.

Movement relationship not verified.
