How rugby is organised in Australia

Australia's domestic club competitions are owned by state and territory unions rather than one national club pyramid. This guide currently explains Queensland Rugby Union's Hospital Cup family while keeping other state, territory, professional, women's, regional and sevens systems separate.

Governing authorityRugby AustraliaGoverning authorityQueensland Rugby Union

Hierarchy

The country structure

Permanent leagues, seasonal phases and parallel competitions stay separate so a cup or playoff is not mistaken for a league tier.

State and territory club rugby

State and territory unions publish their own senior competitions, grades and pathways. Queensland's Hospital Cup is a state-owned senior men's first-grade family, not a permanent national tier.

  • Queensland Premier Rugby

The reviewed 2025 Hospital Cup edition used 18 regular-season rounds and a three-week finals series. Lower grades and the women's Founders Cup remain separate competition families.

Senior men's first grade

The Hospital Cup is Queensland Premier Rugby's stable senior men's first-grade XV family. Its sponsor-bearing edition names do not create new permanent competition identities.

  • Historical 2025 edition

The completed edition used 18 regular-season rounds and a three-week finals series. One reviewed Bond University first-team relationship is projected without copying the ladder.

Women's rugby

Women's competitions are separately owned and structured. Queensland's Founders Cup is not a phase of the men's Hospital Cup, and this guide does not infer equivalent structures across every state and territory.

  • Separate family boundary

Women's, reserve, age-grade, regional and sevens records require their own family and participant evidence.
