How rugby is organised in Argentina

Argentina does not have one national club pyramid. UAR governs through 25 member unions, each with its own competition responsibilities. It runs verified national families and separately publishes representative and cross-border destinations. URBA owns the Buenos Aires ladder described here.

Governing authorityUnión Argentina de RugbyGoverning authorityUnión de Rugby de Buenos Aires

Hierarchy

The country structure

Permanent leagues, seasonal phases and parallel competitions stay separate so a cup or playoff is not mistaken for a league tier.

Member-union ownership

UAR lists 25 member unions. Their local and regional competitions remain under their actual owners rather than forming one automatic national ladder.

  • URBA is one member-union system

The Buenos Aires top division and its movement rules belong to URBA. They do not describe every Argentine club competition.

Senior men’s XV

UAR publishes national club families, including Torneo del Interior and Nacional de Clubes, alongside member-union competitions such as URBA’s senior men’s top division.

  • URBA top division

The reviewed family was called Top 12 in 2025 and expanded to Top 14 for 2026. The sponsor names belong to those editions, not to a second competition identity.

  • National club handoffs

Torneo del Interior and Nacional de Clubes are UAR-owned national families. Their qualification relationships must stay season-specific.

Women’s rugby

UAR publishes separate women’s national-club and sevens destinations. The checked sources do not establish one complete women’s XV ladder across all member unions.

  • Separate women’s families

Women’s club and sevens records must not be folded into the men’s URBA or national-club structure.

Youth and development

UAR publishes Argentino Juvenil M17, M16 development and academy activity as separate pathways.

  • Age-grade identity stays separate

A club or union label in an M17, M16 or academy record is not the same participant team as its senior first XV.

Sevens

UAR lists separate men’s and women’s 7 de la República competition destinations.

  • A separate format

Sevens entrants and results do not create fifteens participation or club-team continuity without their own evidence.

National club events

UAR publishes national club events separately from the member-union ladders that qualify or nominate entrants.

  • Nacional de Clubes

The 2025 event connected named season winners. That evidence does not create a permanent promotion tier above every member-union competition.

Cross-border and representative rugby

UAR lists Super Rugby Américas and representative teams separately from its domestic club competitions.

  • Franchises are not domestic clubs

A Super Rugby Américas entrant or national representative side must not be merged with the member-union clubs that supply players.
