Every time a team scores, the match restarts. Every time the ball crosses the dead-ball line after a 22-metre entry, the match restarts. Depending on the score line and match flow, there can be 15–25 restarts in a single game. Each restart is a possession that can be won or lost, territory that can be gained or conceded, and a set-piece-like opportunity that can be optimised. Yet most teams at club level treat restarts as administrative — "just kick it deep and chase" — rather than strategic.
Professional teams have recognised what restarts are worth. How often a side keeps the ball from its own restart moves a long way with the strategy it picks, and the gap between a poor restart team and a good one shows up as extra possessions starting in the opposition half. Across a season, that compounds into scoring chances.

Deep restarts — the default option
A deep kick-off — sending the ball to the back third of the receiving team's half — is the most common restart strategy at all levels. It is the "safe" option: it guarantees territory, puts the receiving team under immediate pressure, and allows the chasing team to set their defensive line. The risk is that it concedes possession — the receiving team catches the ball and begins an attacking phase.
The effectiveness of a deep restart depends on three factors: hang time (the ball must stay in the air long enough for chasers to arrive under it), accuracy (landing in the target zone rather than sailing out or dropping short), and chase line speed (the kicking team must pressure the catcher immediately). When all three are executed well, a deep restart can force errors — a fumbled catch, a hurried clearance kick, or a collision that creates a turnover opportunity.

Short and contestable restarts
A short or contestable restart aims to regain possession directly from the kick-off. The ball must travel at least 10 metres and the kicking team competes in the air to recover it. When successful, the kicking team gains possession in the opposition half — a high-value outcome. When unsuccessful, the receiving team has the ball in an advanced position with space to attack.
The risk-reward calculation for short restarts depends on several factors: the kicking team's aerial ability (tall, athletic players who compete well in the air), the receiving team's restart positioning (how quickly they adjust to a short ball), the match context (score line, time remaining — a trailing team may accept higher risk), and weather conditions (wind and rain make contested catches harder for both teams, but the kicking team has the advantage of knowing when and where the ball is going).
22 drop-out strategy
The 22 drop-out presents different strategic considerations from the centre kick-off. The drop-out must cross the 22-metre line, but beyond that the kicking team chooses length and direction. The receiving team is typically positioned in a structured formation, so the opportunity for surprise is smaller — but the directional choice matters.
- Long drop-out (deep into the opposition half) — gains maximum territory but concedes possession. Best used when your team's defensive line is well set and you trust your defence more than your attack in the current phase of the match.
- Short/contestable drop-out — aims to regain possession near the 22. High risk: if the opposition wins the ball, they are in prime scoring position. But if your team wins the contest, you retain possession and can launch an immediate attack.
- Directional drop-out — targeting the narrow side or a specific player. If the opposition has a weak catcher or a narrow-side gap, directing the drop-out there creates a mismatch.
- Wind-adjusted drop-out — with a strong wind, a short drop-out with the wind allows a high, hanging ball that the chasing team can contest. Against the wind, a long drop-out may not reach its target — adjusting strategy to conditions is essential.
Measuring restart effectiveness
Effective restart analysis tracks outcomes across multiple metrics, not just "won or lost." A restart that concedes possession but forces the receiving team into their own half and results in a turnover within 3 phases is a better outcome than a restart that retains possession but in a congested area with no space to attack.

Adapting to conditions
