Defensive System Comparison

How the three systems actually differ, and how to pick between them on the day

Every side has to decide how it defends, and each answer costs you something. Drift holds its width and pushes the attack towards the sideline, so you give up metres through the middle but rarely give up a clean break. Rush closes the space fast and forces hurried passes and turnovers, and when it gets beaten there is nothing behind it. Blitz sends one or two defenders at a chosen attacker to break up a set-piece move, which works when the timing is right and hands the opposition an overlap when it is not. None of the three is best in the abstract, because the right call depends on the opposition, where you are on the field, the score, and who you have available. What follows sets the three side by side, says when each one earns its place, and covers the hybrid you will probably end up building.

The three main defensive systems

Defence in rugby comes down to three systems, and each one has a different idea about how you stop the team with the ball. Get the principle behind each of them straight and the question of which to play, and when, gets a lot easier to answer.

How the drift defence works

Drift is the base system most sides play. Each defender owns the attacker immediately outside them, so when the ball moves wide the line slides across, everyone drifting outward to match the width of the attack. The inside defender, the one closest to the ruck, angles their approach to push the ball carrier outwards, and the defenders further out hold their spacing and their depth rather than chasing in.

Drift is simple, and that is most of its value. Every defender already knows who they have, so there is less to call, and a missed tackle is not fatal because the next defender along is already standing where they need to be. What it costs you is midfield metres: line speed is moderate and the movement is sideways rather than forward, so a side that carries straight and keeps the ball tight can walk up the field for several phases before drift ever pushes it wide.

How the rush defence works

Rush is line speed and not much else. The whole defensive line comes forward off the gain line and eats the space the attack was planning to use, and the point is to arrive on the ball carrier before they have finished deciding what to do with it, whether that is running a line, passing, or kicking. Take the time away and the accuracy goes with it, so what you get back is hurried passes, forward passes, spilled ball, and turnovers.

The risk with rush sits behind you. A line that sprints forward has no depth left, so if the attack gets the ball past it with a well-timed pass, a chip over the top, or a straight break, the grass on the other side is empty and nobody is covering. One pass or one kick can turn into a try from your own midfield, and that is why rush works better as a call you make in a particular moment than as the thing you play all afternoon.

How the blitz defence works

Blitz is rush aimed at one player instead of the whole line. It comes out mostly at set piece, off a lineout or a scrum, where one or two defenders, usually the inside centre and a flanker, sprint straight at the first receiver while everybody else holds their shape. You are trying to take the time away from the one player the move depends on, so the pass comes early, the ball goes to ground, or the kick goes up under pressure.

When the timing lands, blitz kills the opposition's first option before the move has really started. Miss it and you have handed them an overlap, because the blitzer either arrives late or gets read, the attacker passes early, and outside the defender who came forward there is now one more of them than there are of you.

Setting the three systems side by side

The figures that used to sit here were never sourced, so read the table below as coaching judgement rather than measurement. It tells you which way each system leans, not how far. If you want real numbers they are within reach of any club with someone free on the touchline. Log where each tackle happens relative to the gain line, count the clean breaks and the turnovers, note the penalties, and after a few matches you will know more about how your own defence behaves than any general figure could tell you.

When to use each system

No system is right for every situation, so the better defensive sides move between them: drift as the default, rush in particular phases or zones, and blitz when a set piece hands them a target worth going after.

The hybrid approach

You do not have to pick one system and live with it for eighty minutes. The usual answer is a hybrid: drift as the base, with rush and blitz calls agreed in advance for particular situations, and one player, normally the inside centre or the openside, calling which system you are in for each phase based on where you are on the field, how the attack is lined up, and the score.

This hybrid approach requires a defensive playbook with clear triggers: "rush on first phase from a lineout in their half," "blitz on their 10 when they are in our 22," "drift on second and third phase in open play." The triggers must be simple enough to communicate in the 2-3 seconds between phases and practised enough that every defender knows their role in each system without hesitation.
