What does "shape" mean in rugby attack?
When coaches talk about "shape," they are describing the spatial arrangement of the attacking players at the moment the ball carrier receives the ball or enters the defensive line. Shape has three dimensions: width (how spread out the attackers are across the field), depth (how far behind the ball carrier the support runners are positioned), and spacing (the distance between individual players in the attacking line).
Good shape creates decision-making problems for the defence. When attackers are well-spaced across the width of the field with appropriate depth, each defender is responsible for a larger zone and must commit to a specific threat — leaving other threats unattended. Poor shape — where attackers cluster together or run flat without depth — simplifies the defensive task by allowing drift defence to cover multiple threats with minimal lateral movement.
Width: using the full field
The rugby field is 68-70 metres wide. A defence that is stretched across the full width must cover approximately 5-6 metres per defender (with 13 in the defensive line). When the attacking team uses only 30-40 metres of width, the defence can compress, each defender covering just 2.5-3 metres — making it far easier to shut down attacks through drift or rush defence.
Full-width attacks force the defence to make choices. If they maintain structure across the full 70 metres, gaps appear between defenders that can be exploited through passing, running lines, or decoy runners. If they compress to protect the centre of the field, the edges become vulnerable to wide plays, cross-kicks, and wing strikes. The attacking team that consistently uses width keeps the defence guessing about where the point of attack will emerge.
Depth: running onto the ball
Depth refers to how far behind the ball carrier the support runners position themselves. A flat attacking line (shallow depth, 1-3 metres behind) carries momentum because the receivers are already close to the defensive line when they receive the ball — but the trade-off is significant: flat runners have less time to read the defence, less space to accelerate, and are more likely to receive the ball standing still or moving laterally.
A deep attacking line (5-8 metres behind) gives receivers time to assess the defensive alignment, choose their running line, and accelerate onto the pass so they receive the ball at speed. The disadvantage is that the deeper positioning means the ball must travel further through the air, giving the defence more time to read and react. The best attacking teams vary their depth depending on the defensive structure they face — flat against a rush defence (to deny the defenders time to close the space) and deep against a drift defence (to maximise acceleration and create outside-shoulder threats).
Spacing: where overlaps live
Spacing between individual attackers determines whether numerical overlaps can be created. When attackers are too close together (2-3 metres apart), a single defender can threaten two attackers, eliminating the advantage that numbers should create. When attackers are too far apart (8-10 metres), passes must cover excessive distance, giving the defence time to slide and adjust.
The optimal inter-player spacing of 4-6 metres creates a situation where each defender must commit to one attacker. If the ball carrier engages a defender and passes, the next attacker receives the ball with 4-6 metres of space to exploit before the next defender can close. This spacing, maintained across the attacking line, generates the incremental advantages — half-metre gains in each defender's position — that compound into overlaps on the edge.
How attacking shape breaks down
- Slow ruck ball: When the ball is slow from the ruck (3+ seconds), the defence resets its line and closes gaps. Attackers who were in good shape when the ruck formed have now drifted or flattened, losing their depth advantage.
- Ball carrier running laterally: A ball carrier who runs across the field (rather than at the defensive line) drags the attack sideways, compressing the space available to outside runners and turning a wide attack into a narrow one.
- Support runners watching instead of working: Attackers who stand and watch the ball carrier instead of holding their position and depth lose shape. Shape is active — it must be maintained through constant movement and spatial awareness.
- Over-committing to the ruck: When too many players enter the ruck (4+ cleaners when 2 would suffice), the attacking line loses bodies. Fewer attackers in the line means fewer threats for the defence to cover, and shape degrades because the remaining players must cover more width with less depth.
- Poor communication: Shape requires verbal and visual communication. Players must call for the ball, signal their position, and coordinate running lines. Silent attacks are shapeless attacks.
Training shape: alignment drills
Shape is a learned skill, not an innate ability. It must be drilled repeatedly until the correct spacing and depth become automatic — something players maintain without conscious thought, even under match pressure.
- Grid walks: Players walk through attacking patterns on a marked grid (cones at 5-metre intervals). The coach freezes the play at the moment of each pass and checks width, depth, and spacing. Corrections are made in real time. This slow-motion rehearsal builds the spatial awareness that transfers to full speed.
- Shadow runs: The attacking unit runs at 75% speed against no defence, focusing solely on maintaining shape across 5-6 phases. The coach watches from behind (to assess depth) and from the side (to assess width). Video review of shadow runs is particularly effective — players can see their shape from the coach's perspective.
- Constrained games: Small-sided games with rules that reward shape — for example, a try is only valid if the ball has been passed through at least 4 pairs of hands, forcing width. Or a bonus point for tries scored in the outer 15-metre channels, incentivising full-field attack.
- Numbered phases: The coach calls a phase number (1-6) and the attacking unit must set up the correct shape for that phase within 3 seconds. Different phase numbers correspond to different width/depth configurations, teaching players to adapt their shape to the tactical situation.
