Sagene IF Rugby is the rugby section of Sagene IF (Sagene Idrettsforening), a multi-sport club in the Sagene district of Oslo, Norway. The section is based at Voldsløkka Idrettspark. It calls itself an inclusive club, with junior, women's and men's teams. The Norwegian Rugby Federation's 2025 membership figures, released in May 2026, made Sagene Idrettsforening the country's largest rugby club, with 389 members.
History
The parent club was founded on 9 July 1921 as Sagene Ballklubb and joined the Workers' Sports Federation (Arbeidernes Idrettsforbund, AIF) when that body was set up in 1924. It took the name Sagene Idrettsforening in 1927, because its activities had grown beyond ball games. Sagene IF is a member of the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF).
In October 2020 rugby was a fairly new department of Sagene IF: the team had been called Oslo Rugbyklubb from 1964 until four years earlier. Since becoming part of a multi-sport club the side had won six national (NM) titles and gained much better facilities in the new clubhouse. The merger with Sagene IF four years before had brought changing rooms and meeting rooms in a new clubhouse, and the team was to get an improved pitch at Voldsløkka.
In September 2017 Sagene IF took part in that season's men's fifteens series, playing Blindern Rugbyklubb at Voldsløkka on 23 September. Sagene is one of five large clubs that play fifteens regularly, with Stavanger, Bergen, Blindern and NTNU.
The men's fifteens competition is the XV Norgesserie, which is separate from the Norgescup. Sagene Idrettsforening won the 2025 men's fifteens table with four wins from four matches and 17 points. It beat Stavanger Rugbyklubb 19–17 on 11 October 2025. For 2026 the men's fifteens were drawn to play NTNUI in round 1 on 29 August and Bergen away in round 2 on 5 September.

Ground
The rugby pitches, Bjølsenfeltet rugbybaner, are part of Voldsløkka Idrettspark on Biskop Heuchs vei, 0464 Oslo. They consist of two large rugby pitches and a smaller training area. The grass is used in summer only, usually from May to the autumn school holiday, and the pitches are also used by Oslo Rugbykrets and the Norwegian Rugby Federation. Visitors can take buses 37 and 54 to Bjølsen or the metro (T-bane) to Nydalen; only street parking is available.
Sagene IF's clubhouse at Stavangergata 32 opened on 20 August 2018. It is a municipal building run by Sagene IF, and rugby is among its user groups. In 2025 Sagene's men's fifteens matches in Oslo were played at venues named "Hovedarena Oslo 1" and "Hovedarena Oslo 2".
Teams and training
The club has men's and women's senior teams, juniors aged 13 to 17 and minis aged 7 to 12. Its junior group is for players under 18. In the fourth round of the 2025 women's sevens series, on 4 October 2025, the club entered two teams, Sagene IF 1 and Sagene IF 2.
As of August 2026, men's senior training is on Tuesdays 20:30–22:00 in winter (November to April) and on Mondays and Wednesdays at Voldsløkka in spring and autumn, 18:00–19:30 or 18:00–20:00. Confirm times with the club.
The club offers free trial sessions: newcomers can simply turn up, and after two trial sessions are expected to join through the Rubic membership system. New players are always welcome, whatever their experience. For 2025 the Sagene IF membership fee was 480 kr per calendar year for members under 26 and 585 kr for members aged 26 and over. The 2025 rugby training fee was 500 kr for juniors and 850 kr for seniors, or 525 kr and 895 kr with the processing charge.
Club life
Sagene IF uses the line Stjerner i striper ("Stars in stripes"); the club takes pride in its shirt and aims for an environment where everyone is welcome. The rugby section's women's team and its junior and mini groups have separate accounts, linked under External links.
