Lugi Lions Rugby Football Club

The club was founded in 1972 by three friends, John Nash, Perry Hadley and Calle Erlandsson. It celebrated its 50th birthday on 14 April 2022. The club joined the Swedish premier division in 1980, finishing third overall in 1982 and second in 1984. Its youth side won gold in the Swedish championships in 1989, 1990 and 1992.

The name LUGI comes from Lunds Universitets Gymnastik och Idrottsförening, a multi-sport association. In 1993 its sections became separate clubs linked by an umbrella organisation, LUGI Alliansen. The rugby club has played at Centrala Idrottsplatsen since 2000. Its women's team was founded in 2003.

In 2018 the men won Division 2 South and were promoted to Division 1, and the women's team won bronze. In 2021 the club's women played as part of a combined regional team, Skånelaget, with players from Malmö and Pingvin of Trelleborg. Skåne won the Swedish championship gold medal, beating their opponents 36–8 in the final.

The women won silver at the Swedish sevens championships in 2024. In 2025, as Lugi Lioness, they won the Swedish women's sevens title. By one count, it was their first championship title. The same year the women were ranked fifth in the final women's XV ranking.

Since 2000 the club's home has been Centrala Idrottsplatsen (Centrala IP) in the middle of Lund. Home matches are played there, the teams train there together in the outdoor season, and the clubhouse is there. The ground is at Fasanvägen 2, 227 32 Lund. The club held its 2026 annual meeting in the clubhouse on 21 February 2026.

In 2026 the men play in Allsvenskan Herr 15s Söder and the women, as LUGI Lions Ladies, in Allsvenskan Dam 15s Söder. By 18 August 2026 the men had won five of their seven league matches.

The women's team welcomes players of all levels. Its year is split between a sevens season, when it always competes as LUGI Lions RFC, and a fifteens season, when it plays either on its own or with other teams from Skåne. The kids and youth section takes children from age 8 until 15 or 16, when they can begin training with the senior teams. The Roarriors bring together players who cannot commit to league matches, who want to play for fun at friendly tournaments, former players and newer players who need slower-paced training. The club's old boys play in the Skåne Old Boys side. Each September and October the club runs introductory sessions (Novisch Rugby) for anyone aged 15 or over who wants to try rugby.

Training times as of August 2026:

New players can train a couple of times before deciding whether to join. For newcomers the club recommends football boots or other studded shoes and comfortable sportswear without zips or loose parts. Players should not wear watches, jewellery or piercings at training, and should buy a mouthguard. The club's joining pages are in English and Swedish.

Fees for 2026, as of August 2026:

The club has adopted rugby's values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, which in its words "define LUGI Lions RFC".
