DTU Exiles Rugby Union Football Club Denmark (DTU Exiles R.U.F.C., also known as Exiles RC) is a rugby union club at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Kongens Lyngby, in Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality, Denmark. The club is a member of DTU Sport and follows its rules for sports activities, but is legally and financially independent. It fields men's and women's teams; the men played in the 2026 Danish men's championship (DM Herrer) as Exiles RC, and the women in the 2026 women's sevens series.
History
Exiles Rugby Union Football Club was founded in 1968 by an international group of passionate players living in Denmark, with its base at P.T.I. (now DTU) in Lyngby. In its first year the club played the Danish national team and won. In another account, its founders, all exiled in Denmark, came together to form the Copenhagen Exiles Rugby Union Football Club; at first the clubhouse was the Britannia Inn on Vesterbrogade and the pitch was at Farum School, and the club later gained the use of the facilities at the technical college (now DTU) that the Exiles still use. Today the club is known as DTU Exiles R.U.F.C.
In 1979 the club was awarded Honorary Associate Membership of the Rugby Football Union, and it is still an honorary member of the RFU.
The Exiles Ladies were officially launched in late March 2000 with their first dedicated training session. The team folded in 2003 and returned after a five-year break.
The club's current constitution came into force on 17 February 2018 and was last updated on 9 February 2021. In February 2026 the club's general meeting heard that the DTU pitch had been destroyed by a neighbouring construction site; it was expected back around 15 April 2026. In January 2026 the committee was looking ahead to the club's 60th anniversary in two years' time.
Honours
- Danish Cup winners, men: 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1989
- Danish champions, women: 2010
- DM sevens runners-up, women: 2010
- 2nd Division champions, men: 2018
These honours are by the club's count; the 1989 cup was its last cup victory. In the 2025 Danish sevens championship the men, as DTU Exiles, finished fourth.
Ground
The club's pitch is at the DTU playing fields in Lundtofte, and the nearby Cellar Bar is still used as it was in the 1970s. The club's address is Henrik Dams Allé, 2800 Kongens Lyngby. Winter training uses an indoor sports hall at DTU and Lyngby Stadium.
Teams and training
The men's team consists mostly of students and PhD students at DTU but is open to anyone who wants to play, and it welcomes players of every level of experience. Players must be at least 16 to play in competitive women's games, and in 2026 the women entered two teams in the women's sevens series, Exiles R.U.F.C and Exiles R.U.F.C 2.
As of August 2026, the training times were:
| Team | Training |
|---|---|
| Men | Thursday 18:00–20:00 at the DTU pitch (once a week at present) |
| Women | Tuesday and Thursday 18:00–20:00 at the DTU pitch |
| Winter sessions | Tuesday 18:00–19:30 in the DTU indoor sports hall; Saturday 15:00–17:00 at Lyngby Stadium |
New members may try a few training sessions before committing to the club and paying fees, and need only ordinary training clothes and, optionally, a water bottle. Subscriptions run by calendar year: 1,400 kr for a full year and 800 kr for half a year for employed members, 800 kr and 500 kr for students, and 100 kr for social members. The general meeting of 15 February 2026 voted unanimously to keep the playing fees unchanged. The club applies a simple rule: "If you don't pay – you don't play!"
Club life
The club's playing colours are all black. Members who can no longer play can keep a social membership, under the club's motto "Once an Exile, always an Exile!" The club's photo gallery includes albums from its 50th anniversary.
