GPS Rugby Club is a rugby union club in Ashgrove, Queensland, Australia, incorporated as GPS Rugby Club Inc. It traces its origin to 1887, when it was founded as Past Grammar Students, and calls itself one of the oldest and largest rugby clubs in Australia. Its first grade plays in the Queensland Premier Rugby competition, known as the Hospital Cup, and the club also runs colts, women's and a large junior section.
History
The club was officially formed in 1887 from a combination of past and present Brisbane Grammar School players, several of whom had represented Queensland as Past Grammar players in 1885 and 1886. The club re-formed after the First World War. In 1930 the constitution was changed to allow past students of the other GPS schools to become members. The club became Greater Public Schools Old Boys in 1931 and played in green and blue for the first time that season.
Over its history the club has played at the Normanby Grounds, New Farm Park and Finsbury Park, and since 1977 at the Ashgrove Sports Ground. A junior club, Ashgrove Districts Juniors, began in 1968. From 1983 it was fostered by GPS Old Boys, renamed itself Ashgrove-GPS and took up the senior club's blue and green hoops. In 2014 the two clubs formally merged as GPS Rugby Club Inc. By the club's count, the merger created Australia's largest rugby club, with more than 1,500 players.
The club's most recent Premier Grade premiership came in 2018. In the 2025 Hospital Challenge Cup the first grade finished seventh, with five wins and eleven defeats from 16 matches. For 2026 the club announced the return of Premier Women's rugby, aiming to field two women's teams for the first time in its history; it had not fielded a Premier Women's team in 2025.
