Scorpions Rugby Club, also known as the Rock Scorpions or the "Scorps", is a community rugby union club in Gibraltar. Under its sponsor's name it is called the Sovereign Insurance Scorpions Rugby Club. It is one of the four federated clubs of the Gibraltar Rugby Football Union (GRFU), and offers senior men's, women's, touch and youth rugby.
History
The club was established in 2010. The Rock Scorpions were one of the four constituent clubs of GRFU's domestic league when it began in 2010 as the Super IVs, and are one of the four founding clubs of the Gibraltar Rugby Championship (GRC).
During the 2021 COVID lockdown in Gibraltar, when local children again had to do their school work from home, the club ran a laptop-donation campaign under the slogan "Make a Change". Its community work has also included stroke awareness and events such as the Cavalcade and a cardboard boat race.
The club calls itself one of the leading community sporting clubs in Gibraltar, and one that has developed numerous Gibraltar national team players.
Ground
The club's ground is the Europa Sports Complex at Europa Point, a shared Gibraltar venue. Its playing and training facilities overlook the Mediterranean, and the club calls them among the best in Gibraltar.
Teams and training
The club offers senior men's rugby, women's rugby and touch rugby, as well as under-20, under-18, under-16 and junior rugby. It also invites people to take up refereeing, coaching and volunteering.
The club offers up to 14 games each season, with all training and matches in Gibraltar and no travelling. It also offers regular overseas touring games. Players receive free physiotherapy on all game days, and the club holds social events throughout the season. It welcomes newcomers, experienced players and people returning to rugby.
Club life
The club calls itself "The Community Club", with a tradition of camaraderie, friendship, inclusion and community engagement. Its players, supporters and volunteers come from all over the world, and its members are involved in every part of Gibraltar rugby, "from the National Team to flipping burgers on the BBQ". The club also calls itself a family-friendly rugby club.
